Tall tales – there’s not that many people that I look up to…

Richard Osman’s storytelling inspires PR strategies - Greg meets tall Richard Osman off the tellie....

Wait, that sounded bad!

I mean, there’s not that many people that I NEED to look up to.

No, still no good.

Errrr….I tell you who is TALL, that Osman bloke off the telly.

And the radio.

And the bookshelf.

And soon to be the silver screen – he’s working with that Spielberg fella..

You see, I met Richard Osman a few weeks back at an epic business event where he was sharing his story of how he got to where he is now. Which is about 6ft 8 from what I can tell.

I am 6ft 5 so I was taken aback when I shook hands and exchanged the usual pleasantries.

Prior to that he’d been discussing how he pretty much created Big Brother – looking at him, it was hardly going to be called “Average Height Brother” – before selling it for an eye-watering amount.

He then went on to discuss how he loves the creative process which is how fun things like “Deal Or No Deal” and “Pointless” came into being.

Yes, that’s also his stuff.

He’s not just the funny one in the corner, it was his show!

Well, he was talking recently in Parliament on the topic of primary school libraries (amongst many things) being an “easy win” for the government and why British books are key exports for the UK.

That got me thinking because books don’t FEEL like a commodity do they?

I’m a published author myself and even ran the PR for one of the biggest bookshops in the country many moons ago but they don’t seem to be an economic thing.

However, they (and the stories contained within) most certainly are.

It’s like when I pitch a client to the media. I rarely start with what they do. I start with their origin story and then their message.

So, I’m intrigued, what’s your origin story?

Think about Batman.

He’s Bruce Wayne but he BECAME Batman because of his story.

Mine?

Former journalist who got sick of small businesses being ignored by the media.

Wrote a book about it.

Got a publishing deal.

I’ve been showing and telling people how to do this ever since – or doing it for them as I do my bit to help entrepreneurs gain the coverage they deserve for their hard work and…for their stories.

What’s yours?
