Ever had one of those “eureka” moments?
Apparently Archimedes had his in the bath, although that is not why I’m in it in this pic (along with the newshounds).
I’m in the bath because I have clearly contracted an extra strong strain of ManFlu, and I’m attempting to sweat it out ahead of a 3pm call.
I’ll leave you with that lovely visual!
I suspect said virus was caught at an event I was at from Sunday until Tuesday evening, where, in fact, I had about 10 eureka moments!
I’ll let you know about them over the next couple of editions, as there’s a lot to get through, but for now, I want to reflect on someone who knows a thing or 3 about baths and indeed, about PR.
Charlie Mullins – A sinking feeling but he turned on the PR taps
Ever had one of those moments around the family dinner table when someone said the most cringeworthy thing and you wanted to disappear through the floor?
I had that recently at the incredible EC Annual Conference when the “colourful” Charlie Mullins was being interviewed.
Let’s just say he is of a time and has views that some might find offensive, never mind dated.
Personally, I ignored them, as I was there to learn from a chap who built a £150m. Business, as awful jokes aside, there should be something to learn.
So I tuned out the Chubby Brown tribute act and listened for the business wisdom.
Believe me, there was plenty.
Especially this bit:
“You can’t grow your business without PR,” Charlie told the packed audience of 1400+ entrepreneurs.
He went on to note in this interview and another I just found that:
“You can be the best plumber in the world, but if people don’t know about you, what’s the point?”
You can watch that second interview HERE, in which he says that 90% of the business owner’s time should be spent doing PR and Marketing.
He goes on to say that in the start-up phase, you should be trying to do this yourself if you can, but once you are up and running, look to get the professionals in.
I couldn’t agree more with Charlie on these points. I’ve tried doing my own plumbing, and it has rarely ended well!
His other comments… I couldn’t disagree more, but I wasn’t there for politics or The Royal Variety Show post-Watershed finale.
I was there for the insight.
90% of the business owner’s time? Start with 90 minutes, once a week, or speak to me.
